What is 3D Secure?
three d se-cure
noun
3D Secure is a security protocol used in online payment transactions to add an extra layer of authentication, typically involving a password or biometric verification, to enhance the safety of credit and debit card transactions.
Visa and Mastercard initiated this protocol, which is referred to as the "Verified by Visa" or "CardMaster's Secure Code". American Express (through SafeKey) and the majority of debit and credit card issuers recognize 3D Secure in addition to its initiators.
How does it work?
3D Secure adds an extra layer of security to prevent fraudulent or questionable transactions. When making an online purchase, customers in certain parts of the world are required to perform an extra verification step with their card issuer before finalizing the payment.
